Carson Higgins Memorial Foundation

We are honored to have the following article in the Revere Magazine this month:

Carson Higgins Memorial Foundation

As the summer moves along, and the new school year approaches, it is hard to believe our community is nearing the two year anniversary of the death of Carson Higgins. Carson was an 11 year old sixth grader at Revere Middle School when he relapsed with Neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer of the nervous system. Carson was originally diagnosed when he was three years old. At that time, he underwent over two years of treatment at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, including many rounds of chemotherapy, surgery, a bone marrow STEM cell transplant, and radiation therapy. Carson relapsed and was Medi-flighted on Thanksgiving Day 2015 back to St. Jude for treatment. Unfortunately, after another 9 month battle against this awful disease, Carson passed away unexpectedly on August 11, 2016.

Heartbroken, the Higgins family celebrated Carson’s life and buried their son and brother. Carson was an amazing child, mature beyond his years, overflowing with kindness and love. He NEVER complained, not once. He endured and persevered through tremendous pain and suffering, though he did not see it that way. He would say it wasn’t that bad, it could be much worse…he continued his love and compassion for others, for his family and friends, for reading and to always want to do his best. Nor did he lose his passion to pay it forward, to put others ahead of himself, to be kind and generous. Early in Carson’s battle against cancer, Carson’s journey was coined a “God Story of Faith, Hope and Love.”

To honor Carson, and to carry on his loving spirit, the Higgins family created the Carson Higgins Memorial Foundation–a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization. The Foundation’s mission is to raise funds to battle childhood cancer at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, to support causes and charities that Carson loved, and to continue to “pay it forward” with kindness and love, just as Carson would have. The Foundation had an amazingly successful first year, raising and gifting moneys for numerous organizations, including: $25,000 to Victory Gallop— a not-for-profit in Bath, OH, specializing in therapeutic horseback riding for children with special needs and catastrophic illnesses; over $30,000 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital—a worldwide leader in both treatment and research for pediatric cancer; over $10,000 for the renovation and enhancement of two courtyards at the Revere Middle School, including all new landscaping in the courtyards, picnic tables, artificial turf, and sun umbrellas—all to make these ideal spaces for student’s use to eat, read, relax, and enjoy the outdoors while learning during the school year; $10,000 in scholarships to 7 Revere High School graduating Seniors; over $10,000 for Kids4Kids, Inc., a not-for-profit supporting the Revere School District creating monthly opportunities for kids to volunteer and give back to charities and families in need; and reserved $5000 for the local Boy Scouts of America Troop 385, based in Bath, to support ongoing Eagle Scout projects—what a great first year, and even more in store for this coming year!
The Foundation’s signature fundraising event is a Carson Higgins Memorial Golf Outing and Dinner. This year, the Golf Outing will be October 1 at Weymouth Country Club in Medina, OH. The evening prior, there is a Memorial Dinner Fundraiser, at Kingfish Restaurant from 1PM–8PM located at 115 Montrose Ave West, Copley, OH. The Memorial dinner will include live music, celebrity bartenders, amazing silent auction items, and a whole lot of fun!

The intention is to have this annual event in honor of Carson’s memory, and to raise funds to support the charities he loved, and to find a cure to childhood cancer. We hope you will come out and support us this year! For much more information on the Carson Higgins Memorial Foundation, and these exciting events please visit the carsonstrong website.
